Does the iPad have most/all the capabilities of a laptop?

On February 8, 2013, in Q&A, by Grammar Nut

My mom has the original iPad, the device on which I am typing this question. I was never really interested before, but now that I am actually using an iPad myself, I must admit that it’s a nifty little device. Currently, I own a NW Series Sony VAIO laptop. I would possibly be willing to sell my laptop for cash that would go towards the newest iPad available but only if it can compare capability-wise. Information, please?
