Do Macs back up to the cloud like iPads and iPhones?

On January 22, 2013, in Q&A, by Arenkay8d2

I have a couple of iPhones (business and personal) and an iPad, and I am considering getting a Mac. In regards to the cloud, is it sort of the same system? Do Mac settings, programs, etc. back up to the cloud so that when you get a new Mac, everything is downloaded right back to it the same way you left it?

Depends what you mean by backing up. You can move your calendar and contacts to iCloud. Any changes you make will be automatically reflected on iCloud, and you can then use those on your other devices (iPhones and iPad) and have them autiomatically sync both ways. I have setup multiple calendars (personal, business, family, etc) and I share them on my other devices. You can also share notes and documents the same way. But you cannot use iCloud to hold full backups of your hard drive: this is just too much data – it would take forever (really) to upload to a cloud service. For backups, you will need a pluggable hard drive (USB or thunderbolt) and use Mac OS’ Time machine. That is what you will use to restore all your data to a new Mac.
